Chapter 45, Problem 7SQ
Summary Introduction

Introduction: The branch of science that deals with the study of the geographic distribution of species is called biogeography. The total number of species present in a given area is called as species richness. The species present in a community can change over many generations. Some of these species alter the habitat, allowing other species to come and substitute them. These changes that take place in a community are collectively called as ecological succession. They are of two types, namely primary succession and secondary succession.

By a currently favored hypothesis, species richness of a community is greatest when physical disturbances are of_____ intensity and frequency. a. low c. high b. intermediate d. variable
Which of the following is the definition for species richness?   A. The number of species in a community.   B. The relative abundance and species richness in a community.   C. The number of dominant species in a community.   D. The proportion of a given species in the community.
Why do moderate levels of disturbance result in an increase in community diversity?a) The resulting uniform habitat supports stability, which in turn supports diversity.b) Less-competitive species evolve strategies to compete with dominant species.c) Habitats are opened up for less competitive speciesd) Competively dominant species infrequently exclude less competitive species after a moderate disturbance.
