Concept explainers
To explain: Why local cortisone injection in an inflamed joint is preferred over the administration of pill.
Concept introduction:
The adrenal cortex acts through the endocrine system under the stressful conditions such as reduced level of blood sugar, volume, and pressure. It stimulates the hypothalamus to secrete the releasing hormone. Then, the releasing hormone stimulates the secretion of the adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) from the anterior pituitary. From the pituitary, ACTH reaches the adrenal cortex through blood circulation and stimulates corticosteroids secretion. Two types of corticosteroids are found in humans namely glucocorticoids (cortisol) and mineralocorticoids. Glucocorticoids or cortisol activates glucose synthesis from protein and are also involved in the breakdown of proteins into amino acids in muscles and influence the immune system.

- VISUALIZE Describe the action taking place at each of the numbered steps in the figure.arrow_forwardVegetarian diets are associated with a lower risk of obesity and diabetes as well as other chronic conditions (Marsh, Zeuschner, & Saunders, 2012). Clearly a vegetarian diet can be a healthy one, but can a vegetarian diet lack nutrients? If so, which nutrients may be lacking? How could these nutrients be measured in the body to determine if someone is deficient in them? Are there vegetarian foods that provide these nutrients or would supplementation be necessary? Are there any interactions to be aware of with the supplements that a vegetarian may take?arrow_forward2) Both the nervous system and the endocrine system communicate with remote parts of the body, but they do so in very different ways. Why is muscular contraction under the control of the nervous system and not the endocrine system? Why is growth regulated by the endocrine system?arrow_forward

As lactic acid and other substances accumulate in an active muscle, they stimulate pain receptors, and the muscle may feel sore. How might the application of heat or substances that dilate blood vessels help relieve such soreness? HINT Think of what is carried to and away from muscles by blood.arrow_forward

If you identified a protein candidate for the signaling molecule, how would injecting it into ventral cells of a gastrula test its function?arrow_forwardExplain in details The Potential Role of Marine Collagen in Bone and Cartilage Regenerationarrow_forwardWhat are the requirements of bone grafts that are being used for tissue engineering applications? Describe briefly bone grafts that are already applied in the clinic. Imagine that you are not seeding cells on the bone graft prior to implantation, you are demanding cell migration from neighborhood tissues via blood. In this regard, what are the required characteristics of bone grafts to support bone regeneration and vascularization?arrow_forward
