Concept explainers
The populations of two countries are given for January 1, 2000, and for January 1, 2010.
a. Write a function of the form
Country | Population in 2000 (millions) | Population in 2010 (millions) |
|
---|---|---|---|
Australia | 19.0 | 22.6 | |
Taiwan | 22.9 | 23.7 |
b. Use the model, from pan (a) to approximate the population on January 1, 2020, for each country. Round to the nearest hundred thousand.
c. Australia had fewer people than Taiwan in the year 2000, yet from the result of part (b), Australia would have more people in the year 2020? Why?
d. Use the models from pan (a) to predict the year during which each population would reach 30 million if this trend continues.

- Focal Length A refracting telescope has a main lens, or objective lens, and a second lens, the eyepiece see Figure 3.42. For a given magnification M of the telescope, the focal length F of the objective lens is a linear function of the focal length Fe of the eyepiece. For example, a telescope with magnification M=80 times can be constructed using various combinations of lenses. The following table gives some samples of focal length for telescopes with magnification M=80. Here focal lengths are in centimeters. Fe 0.3 0.5 0.7 0.9 F 24 40 56 72 a. Construct a linear model for the data. b. In this example, the magnification M is 80. In general, F is proportional to Fe, and the constant of proportionality is M. Use this relation to write a formula for F in terms of Fe and M. c. Solve the equation you obtained in part b for M and thus obtain a formula for magnification as a function of objective lens focal length and eyepiece focal length. d. To achieve a large magnification, how should the objective and eyepiece lenses be selected? FIGURE 3.42arrow_forwardIn this problem you are asked to find a function that models in real life situation and then use the model to answer questions about the guidelines on page 273 to help you. Minimizing Time A man stands at a point A on the bank of a straight river, 2 mi wide. To reach point B, 7 mi downstream on the opposite bank, he first rows his boat to point Pon the opposite bank and then walks the remaining distances x to B, as shown in the figure. He can row at a speed or 2 mi/h and walk as a speed of mi/h (a) Find a function that models the time needed for the trip. (b) Where should he land so that he reaches B as soon as possible?arrow_forwardUse your schools library, the Internet, or some other reference source to find real-life applications of approximations of functions.arrow_forward
