Chapter 47, Problem 3DA
Summary Introduction

To determine: The benefit of taking 100% oxygen following bout of intense exercise.

Introduction: The partial pressure of carbon dioxide determines the pH of the body tissues as it is circulated through the blood to all the body tissues and is exchanged with oxygen. The body tissues have high partial pressure of carbon dioxide due to anaerobic respiration and low partial pressure of oxygen which helps to exchange carbon dioxide and oxygen.

Conflicting Claims About the Effect of Exercise on the Rate of Clothespin Squeezing Student A claims that a person will be able to squeeze a clothespin more times in a minute if the person exercises first. Student A suggests that exercising produces a faster pulse rate, which indicates that the blood is getting to the muscles faster. Student B claims that a person will be able to squeeze the clothespin more times in a minute if the person does not exercise first. Student B suggests that exercise takes energy away from the muscles, and a person who has been resting will have more energy. Which of the two students do you agree with? How could you find out for sure which claim is correct ?
Background information: A static respirometer can be used to measure metabolic rates of small aquatic organisms such as fish and crayfish.  The animal is weighed and placed in the chamber.  The chamber is then filled completely with water and sealed, and the dissolved oxygen level in the water is measured for 30 – 60 minutes. The animal is then removed and the respirometer is rinsed before being filled with clean water for the next trial.  Metabolic rates can be calculated knowing the oxygen consumption rate, the volume of the chamber, and the weight of the animal. The picture shows a typical static respirometer.  The probes on the lid measure dissolved oxygen and temperature and are linked to a computer for data collection.Question -It is common to stop feeding animals for 12 – 24 hours before they are used in metabolic rate trials.  Why is this done?
The below graph shows both ventilation and blood lactate concentration as a function of total oxygen consumption during a bout of exercise. Explain the relationship between these two variables and why these two measures (ventilatory threshold and lactate threshold) tend to occur around the same level of exercise intensity.
