Chapter 48, Problem 4S
Summary Introduction
To determine:
The clinical symptoms that indicate that a person requires surgical implantation of mechanical pacemaker.
Introduction:
The heart’s natural pacemaker is the SA (sinoatrial) node. It is also known as the sinus node. The work of SA node is to generate electrical impulses of the heart. It is a major part of cardiac conduction system and helps to control the heart rate. It consists of cells that are located in the upper part of the right atrium wall.

Your 70-year-old neighbor, Mr. Michael, tells you he has been diagnosed with a second degree heart block. The physician told him he would need a pacemaker implanted. He knows you are a registered nurse and he wants you to explain pacemakers to him. He is worried he will not be able to use a cell phone. Describe for Mr. Michael what a pacemaker is and what precautions, if any, he has to take after the pacemaker is implanted.
