Chapter 48, Problem 5A
Summary Introduction

Introduction:

Mountain climbers may face difficulty at high altitudes and elevations as the concentration of the oxygen and carbon dioxide gas in the air is less. The partial pressure of these gases is less in the atmosphere at increased altitude. This causes the occurrence of “hypoxia”. The less availability of oxygen decreases the amount of oxygen bound to hemoglobin in the blood. This causes the difficulty in breathing leading to dizziness and feeling of fainting sensation.

Mountain climbers may have difficulty at high elevations becausea. the partial pressure of oxygen is lower at higher elevations.b. more CO2 occurs at higher altitudes.c. the concentration of all elements of the air is lower at higher elevations.d. cooler temperatures restrict the metabolic activity of oxygen at high elevations.
Upon acute high-altitude exposure (e.g., greater than 8,000 feat above sea level), which of the following factors contribute to the rapid onset of fatigue and "difficulty breathing" that is often observed?  (Keep in mind, this question is NOT asking about chronic adaptations to living at altitude).     a. The Bohr shift   b. A reduced partial pressure of oxygen in the alveoli   c. A reduction in the oxygen saturation in the arterial blood   d. All of the above are contributing factors   e. Only B and C are true
Which of the following will NOT facilitate the transfer of oxygen to tissues? a. decreased body temperature b. decreased pH of the blood c. increased carbon dioxide d. increased exercise
