The red lionfish, Pteroisvolitans, has beautiful red stripes, streaming fins, and a fearless disposition, and it is deadly. Native to the Pacific Ocean, the red lionfish was first discovered on coral reefs in the Bahamas in 1985. The species has spread to over 3 million square kilometers of the western Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico from Rhode Island to Panama. Lionfish have a voracious appetite for native fish, are armed with venomous spines, produce thousands of eggs every four days, and have no natural predators in their new range.
Why are species like the lionfish considered “invasive”?
a. They are found in areas where they are not native.
b. They were accidentally introduced by humans.
c. They spread aggressively and displace native species.
d. They are predators of other fish.

- The radioactive contamination of ocean waters near the Fukashima Daiichi nuclear power facility in Japan (in 2011) will potentially put seafood harvesting at risk. The organisms likely to be most dangerous for human consumption are: the top carnivores algae and phytoplankton crabs and shrimps herbivorous snailsarrow_forwardIn not more than 200 words or 5 sentences, explain why or why not shark finning used in shark fin soup can induce the destruction of the coral reef ecosystem.arrow_forwardCrown-of-thorns starfish (often abbreviated as COTS; Acanthaster planci) is one of the largest sea stars in the world. It is also well known as a voracious predator of corals. Sudden outbreaks or swarms of this one species can rapidly consume an entire coral reef. Use internet resources to investigate recent research articles on the topic of crown-of-thorns starfish outbreaks on coral reefs. Where do these outbreaks occur? What impacts do they have on near-shore ecosystems? What causes these outbreaks? What management practices, if any, could be employed in response to COTS outbreaks? Site your sourcesarrow_forward
- Shrimp fishing off the coast of Georgia was closed in 2001, due to a drastic reduction in the shrimp population. Landings of blue crab plummeted in 2002 and 2003, as five years of drought and greatly reduced freshwater flow from underground aquifers led to increased salinity in coastal estuaries. These habitats between open ocean and fresh water are the “nurseries’ for many marine animals. Using information you learned in this lab, speculate about possible causes for the decline in shrimp and blue crab populations.arrow_forward57. Lobster is a very valuable seafood export in Canada. The lobsters caught off the coast of Atlantic Canada make up 50% of the world lobster supply. In order to protect the lobster population from overfishing, the Government of Canada has conservation measures in place to ensure the population size is maintained. Some of the measurements include placing a limit on the number of fishing licenses issued, limiting the fishing seasons, establishing minimum and maximum lobster size limits, and protecting egg-bearing females. Fisheries and Oceans Canada regularly monitors and collects data to estimate the lobster population size. The carrying capacity of the lobster population can be best described as the Select one: a. initial bottom plateau in a logistic growth curve that demonstrates a stable population b. steep increase in an exponential growth curve that demonstrates the high biotic potential c. slow increase in a linear growth curve that demonstrates controlled and sustainable…arrow_forward* This is a made up animal. Could dispersion be a population characteristic for the following animal. Their specialized energy consumption (diet) needs to undergo multiple energy transfers with considerable energy losses (radiant energy to aquatic animals) to support their species. is a slow-moving carnivore with a duck bill, flippers, a long neck, and a short range of motion. Is slow and awkward, with no fangs, claws, or nails. While this species is a mammal, it also has the ability to lay eggs as a part of its reproductive cycle. However, a female Jacks can only lay one egg every 5 months. Unlike similar freshwater semi-aquatic mammal species, the beaver, the Platyoth, doesn’t build itself a home or nest instead, it roams. At night, the Jack will locate riparian sedges to hide for sleep.arrow_forward
- In 1955, conservationists in Hawaii were concerned about an invasive species, the giant African land snail, Achatina fulica. A. fulica was reproducing widely and had few predators. In an attempt to control the invader and protect the environment, the conservationists imported the rosy wolf snail, Euglandina rosea (E. rosea), that preys on other snails for food. Which of the following explains what will most likely happen to A. fulica? Why? E. rosea quickly becomes the top predator, instead of A. fulica. The number of A. fulica decreases. A. fulica and E. rosea become competitors, but A. fulica remains the top predator. The number of A. fulica stays constant. A sudden genetic mutation in A. fulica causes them to become smaller and more attractive to E. rosea. The number of A. fulica decreases. Natural selection causes A. fulica to grow bigger, be more aggressive, and eat more snails, including E. rosea, over time. The number of A. fulica increases.arrow_forwardA private reptile breeding facility near the Everglades was destroyed by Hurricane Andrew in 1992. This event contributed to the original influx quantities of pythons in the wild. Pet owners also contributed to the introduction of these reptiles to the Everglades by releasing pets that had grown too large to care for. These reptiles are considered species to this ecosystem. can someone please write an explanation that describes the impact of the Burmese python on the Everglades? In 2009 the invasive spiny water flea Bythotrephes (native to Europe and Asia) was first detected in the lake. Bythotrephes is a more effective predator of the herbivorous zooplankton Daphnia than the native planktivorous perch (represented by the large red arrows between Bythotrephes and Daphnia), and perch consume Bythotrephes at much lower rates than they do Daphnia (represented by the small red arrows between perch and Bythotrephes). It is widely distributed in the Indo-pacific region and abundantly collected in the South and Southeast Asian, and West Pacific Regions. Milkfish is one of the most commercially important fish species in the Philippines. Milkfish reach sexual maturity (approximately 1.5m length and 20 kg weight) in five years in large floating cages, but may take 8-10 years in ponds and concrete tanks. In the natural environment, milkfish populations near the coral reefs spawn during warm months of the year while populations near the equator spawn year-round. First-time spawners produce fewer eggs but larger and older broodstocks produce as many eggs as wild adults of similar size. Broodstocks of about 8 years old and about 6 kg produce 3-4 million eggs. Juvenile and adults milkfish eat a wide variety of relatively soft and small…arrow_forward
