Concept explainers
The nitrogen content of organic compounds can be determined by the Dumas method. The compound in question is first reacted by passage over hot CuO(s):
The product gas is then passed through a concentrated solution of KOH to remove the CO2. After passage through the KOH solution, the gas contains N2 and is saturated with water vapor. In a given experiment a 0.253-g sample of a compound produced 31.8 mL N2 saturated with water vapor at 25°C and 726 torr. What is the mass percent of nitrogen in the compound? (The vapor pressure of water at 25°C is 23.8 torr.)

- Calculate H when a 38-g sample of glucose, C6H12O6(s), burns in excess O2(g) to form CO2(g) and H2O() in a reaction at constant pressure and 298.15 K.arrow_forwardOne of the components of polluted air is NO. It is formed in the high-temperature environment of internal combustion engines by the following reaction: N2(g)+O2(g)2NO(g)H=180KJ Why are high temperatures needed to convert N2 and O2 to NO?arrow_forwardAmoxicillin is an antibiotic packaged as a powder. When it is used to treat babies and small animals, the pharmacist or veterinarian must suspend it in water, so that it can be administered orally with a medicine dropper. The label says to dispose of unused suspension after 14 days. It also points out that refrigeration is required. In the context of this chapter, what is implied in the latter two statements?arrow_forward

- Ethylene (C2H4) plays an important role in the ripening of certain fruits and vegetables. It is sometimes supplemented under controlled conditions at produce—processing facilities but is also produced naturally by many fruit-bearing plants. Although the actual process by which plants produce ethylene is a complex one, imagine that it is produced by the simple breakdown of glucose according to the equation: C6H12O6(s)⟶3C2H4(g)+3O2(g) Given S°= 212.1 J/molK, ΔG°= -910.56 kJ/mol and ΔH°= -1274.5 kJ/mol for C6H12O6 (s). Using the tabulated ΔG° values in the appendix, calculate ΔG° for the reaction in kJ/mol.
