Answer to Problem 1Q

To balance the centripetal force, the centrifugal force acts on us to the right in the left turn and thrown as to the right.

Explanation of Solution

We are riding in the passenger seat of an American car, sitting on the right side of the front seat. As the car makes a sharp turn, we experience an impulse to the left in a left turn.

Newton’s first law states that an object continues to be under the state of uniform motion unless an external force act on it. The body is not well attached to the car so there is no centripetal force pulling it toward the center of the curve. It seems to move from your reference frame to the right because it's all moving left around you attached to the car.

Centrifugal force acts on us to the right in the left turn as the reaction force to the applied centripetal force and thrown us to the right and hits the right door of the car.

Conclusion:

Therefore, in order to balance the centripetal force, the centrifugal force acts on us to the right in the left turn and thrown as to the right.
