A black aluminum glider floats on a film of air above a level aluminum air track. Aluminum feels essentially no force in a magnetic field, and air resistance is negligible. A strong magnet is attached to the top of the glider, forming a total mass of 240 g. A piece of scrap iron attached to one end stop on the track attracts the magnet with a force of 0.823 N when the iron and the magnet are separated by 2.50 cm. (a) Find the acceleration of the glider at this instant. (b) The scrap iron is now attached to another green glider, forming total mass 120 g. Find the acceleration of each glider when the gliders are simultaneously released at 2.50-cm separation.

- A pulley is attached to one end of a rough plank, which makes an angle of 34° with the horizontal. A box is held at rest on the plank by a string that is attached to the box and passes over the pulley. A bucket of water is attached to the other end of the string and hangs freely. The coefficient of static friction between the plank and the box is 0.8. The box remains at rest but is on the point of slipping up the plank. The bucket of water has mass 7.5 kg. pulley box bucket of water 34° Model the box and the bucket of water as particles, the string as a model string and the pulley as a model pulley. (a) By considering the forces acting on the bucket of water, find the magnitude of the tension in the string (in newtons) in terms of g and the magnitude of the acceleration due to gravity (in ms-2). (b) State the four forces that act on the box and draw a force diagram showing them, including the angles that show their directions. (c) Take the unit vector i to be in the direction up the…arrow_forwardA 75.0-g arrow, fired at a speed of 110 m/s to the left, impacts a tree, which it penetrates to a depth of 12.5 cm before coming to a stop. Assuming the force of friction exerted by the tree is constant, what are the magnitude and direction of the friction force acting on the arrow?arrow_forwardA person of mass m stands on a rope ladder that is hanging from a freely floating balloon of mass M. The balloon is initially at rest with respect to the ground. (The buoyant force on the personballoon system is countering the force of gravity.) a. The force is inversely proportional to the square of the distance between B and C. If block A is suddenly removed, determine a) the maximum velocity of B, b) the maximum acceleration of B. Suppose that the air resistance and friction are negligiblearrow_forwardAn object hangs between two walls which are 1.8 m apart. If the rope sags 15° below horizontal and the object’s mass is 1.5 kg, what is the tension in the rope?arrow_forward
- A railroad car which has a mass 9216 kg is constrained to move along a horizontal track under the action of a wind blowing in the direction of the track. The frictional resistance to the car motion is 1/200 of its weight. The force exerted by wind is P=kSu2, where S is the area of the backside of the railroad car, equals to 6 m2, and u is the velocity of the wind relative to car, k=0.12. The absolute velocity of the wind is w=12 m/s. The initial velocity of the railroad car is 0. Determine:a) the maximum velocity vmax of the railroad car;b) the time T taken to reach this velocity;c) the distance x, travelled by the railroad car before reaching a velocity of 3 m/sarrow_forwardA pulley is attached to one end of a rough plank, which makes an angle of 34◦ with the horizontal. If the coefficient of static friction between the block and the bowl is μs and the block is slowly repositioned at different points down the surface of the bowl, at what angle measured from the vertical will the block begin to slide? - A freezer is on a pair of supports in A and a pair of supports in B. The weights of various parts of the freezer are shown. Neglecting friction, determine the reactions on each pair of supports.arrow_forwardThe seed pods of maple trees, also known as "helicopter seeds," spin as they fall, generating a leading edge vortex at the outer edge of each wing-like seed pod. This effect, similar to the vortices generated by hummingbird wings, can generate a sufficient lift force to keep the seed floating in air, allowing it to be dispersed by the wind. The figure below shows a pair of maple seeds L = 3.40 cm in length, with an angle of 70.0⁰ separating the seeds, as shown. If the outer edge of the seeds must rotate with a speed of 1.25 m/s for sufficient lift to be generated, what is the centripetal acceleration of the outer edge of the seeds (in m/s²) as they fall? (Enter the magnitude. Assume the seeds are symmetric about the vertical axis as they fall, as in the figure.) =arrow_forwardA heavy crate is suspended from two ropes as it is lowered from a high shelf to the floor at a constant speed. One of the ropes makes an angle of 28.2 degrees with respect to the vertical and has a tension of 950 N, while the other makes an angle of 33.7 with respect to the vertical. What is the crate's mass in kg?arrow_forward
