Summary Introduction

To define and arrange:

The terms “chloroplast, thylakoid membrane, photosystem, reaction center, and granum” from smallest to largest.

Concept introduction:

The process of photosynthesis takes place inside the chloroplast of the plant cells. This is the reason chloroplasts are referred as “kitchen of the plant cell”. Chloroplast contains grana and stroma. Grana are the place where the light reaction takes place, whereas stroma is the place where the dark reaction of photosynthesis takes place.

Students have asked these similar questions
Where is the proton concentration high in the chloroplast?     Intermembrane space     Thylakoid membrane     Stroma     Thylakoid space
Which of the following does NOT apply to chloroplasts?       They contain an internal membrane system consisting of thylakoids   They contain chlorophyll and the enzymes required for photosynthesis   They are bounded by two membranes, the inner of which is folded into the cristae   They synthesize ATP (adenosine triphosphate) from ADP (adenosine diphosphate) and Pi (inorganic phosphate)
Illustrate the relationships among the membranes and compartments of (a) mitochondria and (b) chloroplasts by sketching simple concentric circles to represent the membranes. Choose the appropriate labels for each sketchfrom the following list: inner membrane, outer membrane, thylakoid membrane, stroma, thylakoid lumen, matrix.
