Chapter 5, Problem 5.128QP
The compound 2,3-dimercaptopropanol (HSCH2CHSHCH2OH), commonly known as British Anti-Lewisite (BAL), was developed during World War I as an antidote to arsenic-containing poison gas. (a) If each BAL molecule binds one arsenic (As) atom, how many As atoms can be removed by 1.0 g of BAL? (b) BAL can also be used to remove poisonous heavy metals like mercury (Hg) and lead (Pb). If each BAL binds one Hg atom, calculate the mass percent of Hg in a BAL-Hg complex. (An H atom is removed when a BAL molecule binds an Hg atom.)

Boron trifluoride is used as a catalyst in the synthesis of or-ganic compounds. When this compound is analyzed by massspectrometry several different 1+ ions form, including ions representing the whole molecule as well as molecular fragments formed by the loss of one, two, and three F atoms. Given that boron has two naturally occurring isotopes, ¹⁰B and ¹¹B, and fluorine has one, ¹⁹F, calculate the masses of all possible 1+ ions
With the advent of techniques such as scanning tunneling microscopy, it is now possible to “write” with individual atoms by manipulating and arranging atoms on an atomic surface.(A) If the image is prepared on a platinum surface that is exactly 20 platinum atoms high and 14 platinum atoms wide, what is the mass (grams) of the atomic surface? Show all work. [2](B) If the atomic surface were changed to ruthenium atoms and the same surface mass as determined in part (B) is used, what number of ruthenium atoms is needed to construct the surface? Show all work. [2]
What is the mass, in grams, of Vitamin C (C6H8O6) that contains 1.076 grams of carbon?
