Chapter 5, Problem 5.67P
Review. One side of the roof of a house slopes up at 37.0°. A roofer kicks a round, flat rock that has been thrown onto the tool by a neighborhood child. The rock slides straight up the incline with an initial speed of 15.0 m/s. The coefficient of kinetic friction between the rock and the roof is 0.400. The rock slides 10.0 m up the roof to its peak. It crosses the ridge and goes into free fall, following a parabolic trajectory above the far side of the roof, with negligible air resistance. Determine the maximum height the rock reaches above the point where it was kicked.

A 2.0 m long wooden stick weighing 9.0 kg is hung from the ceiling. 50 cm above the lower end hits a ball with a mass of 20 g at a speed of 400 m/s. By what angle does the stick deviate from the vertical axis? (The solution is 21°)
Using a simple pulley and rope system, a crewman on an Arctic expedition is trying to lower a crate of mass ?1=5.13 kg to the bottom of a steep ravine of height ?=22.5 m. The crewman of mass ?2=60.9 kg is walking while holding the rope, being careful to lower the crate at a constant speed of ?0=1.50 m/s. Unfortunately, when the crate reaches a point ℎ=12.5 m above the ground, the crewman steps on a slick patch of ice and slips. The crate immediately accelerates toward the ground, dragging the hapless crewman across the ice and toward the edge of the cliff.
Assuming the ice is perfectly slick, so that there is no friction between the crewman and the ice once he slips and falls down, at what speed ?1 will the crate hit the ground? Assume also that the rope is long enough to allow the crate to hit the ground before the crewman slides over the side of the cliff, and that the pulley is frictionless.
?1=. m/s
At what speed ?2 will the crewman hit the bottom of the ravine? Assume no…
You are the physics consultant working on an action movie set where an SUV must start from rest, accelerate along a pier, and jump over a stretch of water to land in a departing ferry. (The director assures you it will all be very exciting.) The drawing below shows the situation.
The SUV has four-wheel drive (see problem N5D.1), and the coefficients of friction between the tires and the pier’s surface are us =3/4 and uk = 1/2. Calculate the length L (as a fraction or multiple of D) of the run along the pier that you will need for the SUV to make it to the ferry. Ignore air drag.
