Question
Chapter 5, Problem 78E
Interpretation Introduction
Interpretation:
Each acid is to be determined as a binary or an oxyacid and each of them is to be named. In case of oxyacid, the name of oxyanion is to be provided.
Concept introduction:
Binary acids are composed of hydrogen and a non-metal.
In order to name the binary acids, base name of the non-metal plus ic- prefixed by hydro and suffixed by acid is followed.
Acids that are composed of hydrogen, a non-metal and oxyanion (anion containing oxygen) are termed oxyacid.
The name of acids containing oxyanions ending with –ite is named by base name of the oxyanion plus –ous suffixed by acid.
The name of acids containing oxyanions ending with –ate is named by base name of the oxyanion plus –ic suffixed by acid.

Cu (II) sulfate exists as a hydrate. It has many practical uses including use as a fungicide and pesticide. When mixed with chromium and arsenic it forms the wood preservative called CCA. CCA was used in pressure treated wood to protect wood from rotting due to insects and microbial agents. Because CCA treated wood contains toxic heavy metals, its use has been discontinued for home use and children’s play sets.
1. A chemist is given a sample of the CuSO4 hydrate and asked to determine the empirical formula of it. The original sample weighed 42.75 g. After heating to remove the waters of hydration, the sample weighed 27.38 g. Determine the formula for this hydrate.
Draw a water molecule and show the partial charges. Explain why water has a partial charge.
