Concept introduction:
The distance present between the nucleus and the valence shell electrons of an atom is known to be the atomic size or atomic radius of that atom. On moving along the period in a periodic table, the number of orbitals remains the same and a new electron is added to the same orbit. As a result, the atomic radius of elements decreases along the period. On the other hand, the atomic radius of elements increases down the group due to addition of extra orbital.

- The radius trend and the ionization energy trend are exact opposites. Does this make sense?arrow_forwardThe compound cisplatin, Pt(NH3)2Cl2, has been studied extensively as an antitumor agent. The reaction for the synthesis of cisplatin is: K2PtCl4(aq)+2NH3(aq)Pt(NH3)2Cl2(s)+2KCl(aq) Write the electron configuration for platinum ion in cisplatin. Most d8 transition metal ions exhibit square planar geometry. With this and the name in mind, draw the structure of cisplatin.arrow_forwardWhich of the atoms listed below has the largest radius?
