Introduction:
Metabolism is important to all life forms because it serves the organisms with energy. Energy can come from many ways and forms for instance- Plant uses sunlight (photosynthesis) to produce or get energy, some animals eat plants to produce energy and some other animals eat animals to produce energy. All living things are made up of small units known as cell and cell cannot survive on their own. A cell requires energy to do some basic functions like growth, reproduce, repair and defense.
Explanation of Solution
Let us understand what it means by the term life first.
Life has no specific definition as it is not a substance but a process, so, life is considered as combination of few characteristics like- growth, reproduce, respond, homeostasis, etc. and one of the most important characteristic is metabolism.
All living things require energy and this required energy comes from metabolism. All living things are made up of small units known as cell and cell cannot survive on their own. A cell requires energy to do some basic functions like growth, reproduce, repair and defense. If a cell requires energy it ultimately means that all living organisms require energy to live and survive.
Energy can come from many ways and forms for instance- plant uses sunlight (photosynthesis) to produce or get energy. Some animals eat plants to produce energy and some other animals eat animals to produce energy.
So, an organism can either produce energy by its own or can get the energy from other organism, in both cases they all require metabolism to utilize energy.
All life form require metabolic activity to utilize energy in order to survive.
