Is there a fixed pattern in the distribution of El Niño and La Niña events? In other words, does one type of event always follow the other?

Summary Introduction

To review:

From the given graph, whether the pattern of occurrence of El Nino and La Nina is fixed or not is to be determined.

Biology: The Dynamic Science (MindTap Course List), Chapter 51, Problem 3ITD

Introduction:

El Nino is a Southern oceanic phenomenon that occurs on the western coast of South America and the east coast of Australia, usually around the time of Christmas. The ocean water warms up by a change in the wind direction, and the warm water is pushed towards the western coast of South America. As a result of this, the anchovy fish die, and thus, the food chain is disrupted. The birds that feed on these birds and whose dung (guano) is a source of fertilizer, also decline in number. Thus, the overall economy Peru, Ecuador, and Chile suffers upon the arrival of El Nino. The reverse condition of El Nino is called La Nina.

Explanation

From the graph, it can be deduced that the occurrence of El Nino was spaced between 4 and 6 years earlier and the rise in the SST was also not high. The last recorded years show an average gap of 2 years, which also indicates that the SST is rising, which may decrease the gap. Thus, the occurrence of future events and their years can be predicted from the given data...
