Distinctions between keratinized and non-keratinized stratified squamous epithelia on the basis of histology, location, and function.
Introduction:
Epithelial cells are a sheet of adhering cells that cover the body surfaces and cavities in the form of internal and external linings of body organs and tissues of glands. The main functions of the epithelial cells are protection, secretion, absorption, excretion, sensation, and filtration.
Stratified epithelial cells consist of 2 to 20 layers of epithelial lining, which appears in simple, cuboidal, and columnar in shape. It acts as a protective layer since it has more number of layers. It has capabilities to withstand epithelial abrasions. It undergoes self-renewing process, where the epithelial cells constantly fill the cavities of organs.
