These movements occur due to the contraction of the skeletal muscles and elastic recoil of the stretched tissues. Inspiration is the process by which air enters the lungs and expiration is the process by which air rich in carbon dioxide is released from the lungs.
Breathing rate can be defined as the rate at which breathing occurs.
