Question
Chapter 57, Problem 4A
Summary Introduction
Introduction:
The greenhouse gases contribute to the accumulation of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. The high concentration of carbon dioxide results in increase the temperature of the atmosphere. These gases absorb the infrared rays and emit the radiation into the atmosphere that result in increase the temperature of the atmosphere. The greenhouse gases also contributes the global warming effect.

Why are many people especially concerned about the release of carbon dioxide through fossil fuel combustion?
A. Carbon dioxide is by far the most abundant of the greenhouse gases released through human activities.
B. More than any other climate driver, carbon dioxide has contributed the most to the global rise in temperature since the industrial revolution.
C. Carbon dioxide turns over very slowly, so the carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere today can affect the global climate for thousands of years into the future.
D. All of the above are correct
E. None of the above are correct
Imagine that humans have significantly reduced the amount of greenhouse gas emissions on Earth, but the planet is still warming due to past emissions. How might solar radiation management be implemented to rapidly cool the planet and prevent further impacts of climate change?
a.
aerosols can be removed from clouds to decrease the amount of cloud condensation nuclei
b.
sulfur dioxide can be injected into the stratosphere to decrease albedo
c.
sulfur dioxide can be injected into the atmosphere to increase albedo
d.
shipping can be regulated to reduce the cloud condensation nuclei of ship tracks
We learned an ironic twist to the story of global warming while watching the film: Ice and Brimstone: Years of Living Dangerously. What was it?
a. That an increase in erupting volcanoes was another extreme weather event.
b. That running wind mills pollutes more than coal plants.
c. That oil refineries were one of the largest contributors to research in clean energy.
d. That melting ice in the arctic was revealing new deposits of coal to be mined.
