Amazon Sets a Demanding Pace on the Job
In a visit to an Amazon distribution center, a group of business students and their professors met with the general manager.3 After taking them on an extensive tour of the five-acre facility, the general manager commented on the slowness of the visitors' walking pace. He described the Amazon Pace, a fast, aggressive walk, and confirmed that the average employee walks eight or nine miles during a shift.
These employees are called "pickers," and their task is to fill an order and deliver it to the processing and packing center as quickly as possible. The design of the center is a trade secret that results in a random distribution of products. Therefore, the picker has to cover a number of directions and distances while filling an order. Those who cannot keep up the pace are usually let go, just as would be those who steal.

- What are the advantages and limitations of using Little’s Law?arrow_forwardConsider a law firm with 15 lawyers and 3 paralegals. The firm is struggling to keep up with the high demand for its services, particularly during the busy litigation seasons. It has been observed that the lawyers spend a significant amount of their time on administrative tasks that could potentially be handled by paralegals. After a careful study of the work distribution within the firm, it was determined that 35% of the activities carried out by the lawyers are administrative in nature. Given that each lawyer works 50 hours a week, please determine: (a) How many additional paralegals should the firm hire to handle the administrative tasks currently performed by the lawyers? (b) If the lawyers' time spent on administrative tasks is redirected to billable legal work, by what percentage could the firm potentially increase its billable hours?arrow_forwardThis is a subjective question and would need answer asap if possiblearrow_forward

Dr. Grady explained that in a small practice with only a few employees, Janice was having a significant impact on work flow in the office. He warned her that she must improve if she was to continue working there. Discuss the possible impact of Janice’s actions on patients, coworkers, and Dr. Grady. Due to increased levels of competition, this company is now increasingly finding it difficult to compete – especially as the larger companies seem to be a little more innovative, agile and responsive to client requirements. Management have noticed that staff, especially the highly skilled ones, are now leaving the company to seek work elsewhere (in these larger companies).
