The maximum sustainable yield (MSY) is the
highest rate at which a potentially renewable
resource can be used indefinitely without
reducing its available supply. The idea is to
remove individuals while keeping the
population at a constant growth rate and size,
but to find the size where the harvest is
maximized. The greater the growth rate, the
more individuals you can remove and not
change the population size. Where is the
growth rate at its maximum? To find this look
at your logistic model simulator.
1. Set up a hypothetical salmon population
where the carrying capacity is 20,000 fish,
the maximumr is 0.7. According the the
maximum sustainable yield (MSY), at what
population size should we maintain the
salmon while fishing?
What conditions produce an inverted pyramid of biomass in which the consumers have a greater biomass than the producers? Can you think of an example of an inverted pyramid of numbers in which there are, for example, more herbivores than plants on which they feed?
In a temperate grassland ecosystem, to tal primary production was 12,740 g/m/yr. Annual net
secondary pro duction by the herbivorous insect community was 320.5 g/m2/yr. Total net tertiary
production by spiders was 22.6 g/m/yr. Is productivity biomass-based or productivity-based?

- The growth of a population of natural resources (such as hardwood trees) over time is illustrated by the graph. Two significant pieces of information are included: the environment's carrying capacity and the maximum sustainable yield. The environment's carrying capacity is the point at which all available resources are being used by the organisms in the population, and the maximum sustainable yield is the point at which the highest number of the population are being harvested without impairing the populations' growth. (see pic.) Identify the assumptions about population growth that are implicit in the figure. (multiple answers can be chosen.) A) The environment's carrying capacity does not change over time due to any increase or decrease of resource availability. B) The population grows logistically until it nears the environment's carrying capacity and does not diverge from this rate over time. C) The maximum sustainable yield grows logistically until it reaches the…arrow_forwardA fishprint provides a measure of a country’s fish harvestin terms of area. The unit of area used in fishprint analysisis the global hectare (gha), a unit weighted to reflect therelative ecological productivity of the area fished. Whencompared with the fishing area’s sustainable biocapacity (itsability to provide a stable supply of fish year after year, expressed in terms of yield per area), its fishprint indicateswhether the country’s annual fishing harvest is sustainable. The fishprint and biocapacity are calculated using thefollowing formulas:Fishprint in (gha) = metric tons of fish harvestedper year/productivity in metric tons per hectare ×weighting factorBiocapacity in (gha) = sustained yield of fish in metrictons per year/productivity in metric tons per hectare ×weighting factorThe following graph shows the earth’s total fishprint andbiocapacity between 1950 and 2000.
