A Southern Georgia school district is considering ordering 53 propane-fueled school buses. “They’re healthier, they’re cleaner burning, and they're much quieter than the diesel option.” said a school administrator. Propane-powered buses also reduce greenhouse gasses by 22% compared to gasoline-powered buses and 6% compared to diesel ones. But they come at a premium $103,000 for a propane model, $15,000 more than the diesel equivalent.
The propane bus operating cost (above and beyond fuel cost) is 30 cents/mile, compared to 40 cents for the diesel. Diesel fuel costs about $2/gallon in Georgia, about SI more than propane.
Bus mileage is 12 mpg for the propane model vs. 10 mpg for diesel. The life of a school bus in the district averages 9 years, and each bus travels an average of 30,000 miles per year because the district is so large and rural.
Which bus is the better choice based on a life-cycle analysis?

- The Solution: Mr. Peterson started Flex car in Seattle in 1999 with just five vehicles. His first step, which he has repeated in other cities, was to partner with local public-transportation boards, universities and businesses to help market his program. For instance, in some cities Flex car has made deals with transit officials that let the company offer its customers passes for public buses and trains. And some employers partially subsidize Flex car memberships as a perk for their employees. Mr. Peterson's marketing tried to position car sharing as liberating, offering slogans such as "Why buy wheels when you can borrow them?" Flex car’s ads also urge drivers to "Shift your thinking" about car ownership--don't look at a car as a status symbol but as a means of getting around. Don't even look at it as property, in fact; think of it more as a time-share vacation home. Car sharing "gives you a short-term relationship, kind of like getting a motel room instead of buying a house," says…arrow_forwardThe airline industry has suffered recent setbacks, such as the highcost of fuel, which have forced the major carriers to cut back onmany of their services. Many airlines, like Delta and United, chargepassengers a fee for checked baggage. Spirit Air announced itwould charge for both checked and carry-on bags.37 Most airlinescharge for in-flight snacks or don’t serve any at all. Airlines havereduced the number of flights they operate to certain destinations, packing planes full to overflowing, and recent restrictions on theuse of frequent-flyer miles make it difficult to cash them in. Thenthere are the record-setting delays and lost-luggage claims. All ofthese factors add up to less-than-enjoyable flying experiences formost travelers, many of whom are opting to find other modes oftransportation or just staying home. Suppose you are a marketer forone of the major airlines. Your company is facing difficulty providing acceptable service to the passengers on its flights, but you needto find a…arrow_forwardDiscount-Mart (see Problem 16.8), as part of its newLean program, has signed a long-term contract with SpecialtyLighting and will place orders electronically for its halogen lamps.Ordering costs will drop to $.50 per order, but Discount-Mart alsoreassessed its carrying costs and raised them to $20 per lamp.a) What is the new economic order quantity?b) How many orders will now be placed?c) What is the total annual cost of managing the inventory withthis policy?arrow_forward
- Amy lives in Papar but works in Kota Kinabalu. After struggling for years with public transport such as mini-buses and the train and receiving many complaints from fellow travelers, she has decided to look into providing several upgraded bus services in and around Kota Kinabalu which would provide more comfort and hygiene. The busses will be modern, air-conditioned and either hybrids or electrical. Amy is using the public transport busses as used in KL as a model. The prices charged to the customer would be somewhat above the current mini-bus prices but Amy believes that many commuters will be more than willing to pay a bit extra for a comfortable and safe alternative. - What are some of the disadvantages of chargeback systems?arrow_forwardAs mentioned in the chapter, some analysts predict barcodes maybe replaced by a wireless technology called radio-frequency identification (RFID). RFID is a system of installing tags containing tinycomputer chips on, say, supermarket items. These chips automatically radio the location of the item to a computer network whereinventory data is stored, letting store managers know not onlywhere the item is at all times but also when and where it was madeand its color and size. Proponents believe RFID cuts costs and simplifies inventory tracking and reordering. It may also allow marketersto respond quickly to shifts in demand, avoid under- and overstocking, and reduce spoilage by automatically removing outdated perishables from the shelves. Privacy advocates, however, think thechips provide too much product-preference information that mightbe identified with individual consumers. In the meantime, Walmartrequires its major suppliers to use the new technology on productsstocked by the giant…arrow_forwardMidland Transmissions and Axels Inc. has been a very successful business catering to the light duty trucking industry for the past 11 years.
