Answer to Problem 10PEA

Switching on the toaster will trip the circuit breaker.

Explanation of Solution

Write the expression for Ohm’s Law.

    V=IR

Here, V is the voltage, I is the electric current and R is the resistance.

Rewrite the above equation for current.

    I=VR                                                                                                                (I)

Write the expression for power.

    P=VI

Here, P is the power, V is the voltage and I is the electric current.

Rewrite the above equation to calculate the current.

    I=PV                                                                                                              (II)

Write the expression for the total current requirement by all the equipments.

    I=I1+I2+I3+I4                                                                                         (III)

Here, I is the total current requirement, I1 is the current in the toaster, I2 is the current in the motor, I3 is the current in the lightbulbs, I4 is the current in the electric iron.

Conclusion:

Substitute I1 for I, 120V for V and 15Ω for R in equation (I) to find the current in the toaster.

    I1=120V15Ω=8A

Substitute I2 for I, 0.20hp for P and 120V for V in equation (II) to find the current in the motor.

    I2=0.20hp120V=0.20hp(746W1hp)120V=1.24A

Calculate the total power of all the lightbulbs.

    P=3×100W=300W

Substitute I3 for I, 300W for P and 120V for V in equation (II) to find the current in the lightbulbs.

    I3=300W120V=2.5A

Substitute I4 for I, 600W for P and 120V for V in equation (II) to find the current in the electric iron.

    I4=600W120V=5A

Substitute 8A for I1, 1.24A for I2, 2.5A for I3 and 5A for I4 in equation (III) to calculate the total current requirement by all the equipments.

    I=8A+1.24A+2.5A+5A=16.74A

The total current requirement by all the equipments is greater than 15.0A, therefore it will trip the circuit breaker.
