Process after a weld is gouged.

Explanation

Back gouging is the process of making groove on the back side of the joint. U and J type shapes are used to make groove. Gouging gives 100% penetration to the joint. Penetration is necessary for the most of the welding joint especially in pressure vessel. This removes all the discontinuities and unwanted metal from the root pass. This process also gives complete fusion after root pass. A double side U shape gouged joint is shown below:
