Interpretation: The expression for the fluid velocity in terms of the distance from the centre of the shaft is to be derived.

  V=A+Br  ..... (1)

V = Fluid velocity, a function of distance from the shaft

r = Distance from the centre of the shaft

The expression for the fluid velocity is V=(r0-r)(r0-ri)ωd2 .

Explanation of Solution

Let r0 be the distance from the centre to the outer boundary of the shaft and ri be the distance from the centre to the inner boundary of the shaft.

The equation for the outer boundary can be written as,

  V(r0)=A+Br0  ..... (2)

The equation for the inner boundary can be written as,

  V(ri)=A+Bri  ..... (3)

Now as per the question, the conditions given are,

  V(r0)=0V(ri)=ωd2

d = Shaft diameter

  ω = Angular velocity

Substitute the above conditions in equation (2) and equation (3),

  0=A+Br0A=-Br0.......(4)

Substitute equation (4) in equation (3) along with inner boundary condition,

  ωd2=-Br0+BriB(ri-r0)=ωd2B=ωd2(ri-r0)B=-ωd2(r0-ri).......(5)

Substitute equation (5) in equation (4),

  A=r0ωd2(r0-ri).......(6)

Substitute equation (6) and equation (5) in equation (1),

  V=r0ωd2(r0-ri)-rωd2(r0-ri)V=(r0-r)(r0-ri)ωd2.......(7)

Conclusion

The expression for the fluid velocity is V=(r0-r)(r0-ri)ωd2 .
