Concept explainers
You are working during your summer break as an amusement park ride operator. The ride you are controlling consists of a large vertical cylinder that spins about its axis fast enough that any person inside is held up against the wall when the floor drops away (Fig. P6.7). The coefficient of static friction between a person of mass m and the wall is μs, and the radius of the cylinder is R. You are rotating the ride with an angular speed ω suggested by your supervisor. (a) Suppose a very heavy person enters the ride. Do you need to increase the angular speed so that this person will not slide down the wall? (b) Suppose someone enters the ride wearing a very slippery satin workout outfit. In this case, do you need to increase the angular speed so that this person will not slide down the wall?

- A centrifuge used for training astronauts rotating at 0.810 rad/s is spun up to 1.81 rad/s with an angular acceleration of 0.050 rad/s2. a. What is the magnitude of the angular displacement that the centrifuge rotates through during this increase in speed? b. If the initial and final speeds of the centrifuge were tripled and the angular acceleration remained at 0.050 rad/s2, what would be the factor by which the result in part (a) would change?arrow_forwardA particle moves 3.0 m along a circle of radius 1.5 m. (a) Through what angle does it rotate? (b) If the particle makes this trip in 1.0 s at a constant speed, what is its angular velocity? (c) What is its acceleration?arrow_forwardA disk is initially at rest. A penny is placed on it at a distance of 1.0 m from the rotation axis. At time t = 0 s, the disk begins to rotate with a constant angular acceleration of 2.0 rad/s2 around a fixed, vertical axis through its center and perpendicular to its plane. Find the magnitude of the net acceleration of the coin at t = 1.5 s.arrow_forward
- A common carnival ride, called a gravitron, is a large cylinder in which people stand against the wall of the ride as it rotates. At a certain point the floor of the cylinder lowers and the people are surprised that they don't slide down. Suppose the radius of the cylinder is r = 13 m, and the friction between the wall and their clothes is μs = 0.64. Consider the tangential speed v of the ride's occupants as the cylinder spins. (a) What is the minimum speed, in meters per second, that the cylinder must make a person move at to ensure they will "stick" to the wall? (b) What is the frequency f in revolutions per minute of the carnival ride when it has reached the minimum speed to "stick" someone to the wall?arrow_forwardA common carnival ride, called a gravitron, is a large cylinder in which people stand against the wall of the ride as it rotates. At a certain point the floor of the cylinder lowers and the people are surprised that they don't slide down. Suppose the radius of the cylinder is r = 11 m, and the friction between the wall and their clothes is μs = 0.55. Consider the tangential speed v of the ride's occupants as the cylinder spins. a. What is the frequency f in revolutions per minute of the carnival ride when it has reached the minimum speed to "stick" someone to the wall?arrow_forwardA carnival ride tests your courage by putting you in a situation that would appear dangerous. A person with a mass of 75.3 kg steps into a cylindrical tube that has a radius of 4.1 m. The tube begins to rotate around its center axis. As the speed of rotation increases, the passenger feels pushed against the wall of the tube. When the tube is rotating rapidly, the floor drops out. Luckily, there is a coefficient of static friction between the passenger and the wall, which keeps them from falling. If the value of that coefficient is 0.501, then what is the minimum speed that the passenger must be moving at?arrow_forward
- There is a clever kitchen gadget for drying lettuce leaves after you wash them. It consists of a cylindrical container mounted so that it can be rotated about its axis by turning a hand crank. The outer wall of the cylinder is perforated with small holes. You put the wet leaves in the container and turn the crank to spin off the water. The radius of the container is 12.2 cm. When the cylinder is rotating at 2.45 revolutions per second, what is the magnitude of the centripetal acceleration at the outer wall? Number Units #arrow_forwardIn an amusement park ride, a person with mass 70 kg stands against the wall of a cylindrical room with radius 10.3 and coefficient of friction 0.457 between the rider and the wall. The ride begins to rotate. When the ride attains a constant speed of 7.3 m/s, the floor drops down ward. The rider remains pinned against the wall. What is the magnitude of the force that the rider feels pinning him against the wall?arrow_forwardIn a classic carnival ride, patrons stand against the wall in a cylindrically shaped room. Once the room gets spinning fast enough, the floor drops from the bottom of the room! Friction between the walls of the room and the people on the ride make them the "stick" to the wall so they do not slide down. In one ride, the radius of the cylindrical room is R = 7.6 m and the room spins with a frequency of 19.7 revolutions per minute. 1) What is the speed of a person "stuck" to the wall? m/s Submit 2) What is the normal force of the wall on a rider of m = 47 kg? N Submit 3) What is the minimum coefficient of friction needed between the wall and the person? Submit Submit 5) Which of the following changes would decrease the coefficient of friction needed for this ride? 4) If a new person with mass 94 kg rides the ride, what minimum coefficient of friction between the wall and the person would be needed? increasing the rider's mass increasing the radius of the ride increasing the speed of the…arrow_forward
- Answer is 26. Please show me how to obtain it.arrow_forwardA small ball of mass m is suspended by a string of length I. The Sung makes an angie ß with the vertical. The ball revolves in a circle with an unknown constant angular speed w. The orbital plane of the ball is at a height h above the ground. Let g be the gravitational constant. You may ignore air resistance and the size of the ball. m +y +x Find an expression for the angular speed w. Express you answer in terms of some or all of the following: 1, ß, and g.arrow_forwardTwo bugs, Buzz and Crunchy, are siting on a spinning disk on a horizontal plane. Buzz is sitting halfway and Crunchy is sitting at the outer edge as shown. The radius of the disk is 0.80 m and the disk is rotating with an angular speed of 38 rpm. The coefficient of friction between the bugs and the disk are us = 0.80 and uk = 0.60. What is the magnitude of the friction force on Buzz, in Newtons? Buzz has a mass of 2.0 kg (I know, a big bug!). Your answer needs to have 2 significant figures, including the negative sign in your answer if needed. Do not include the positive sign if the answer is positive. No unit is needed in your answer, it is already given in the question statement. Crunchyarrow_forward
