Question
Chapter 6.6, Problem 10P
Interpretation Introduction
Interpretation:
An explanation for the very large spread in reaction rates of solvolysis, in case of open chain tertiary alkyl halide and two bicyclic bridgehead
Concept Introduction:
Solvolysis is a nucleophilic substitution reaction in which the solvent itself acts as a nucleophile.
A bridgehead carbocation is unstable because the ring structure puts a restriction on its ability to assume the normal planar configuration.

most of the additions of bromine to double bonds gave entirely antistereochemistry. Explain why the addition to phenanthrene gives a mixture of synand anti stereochemistry. When the product from (c) is heated, HBr is evolved and 9-bromophenanthrene results.Propose a mechanism for this dehydrohalogenation.
Based on what you know about the relative stabilities of alkyl radicals and benzylic radicals, predict the product of addition of HBr to 1-phenylpropene in the presence of a free-radical initiator. Propose a mechanism for this reaction.
The p-toluenesulfonate derived from (R)-2-octanol and p-toluenesulfonyl chloride was allowed to react with sodium benzenethiolate (C6H5SNa). Give the structure, including stereochemistry and the appropriate R or S descriptor, of the product.
