The article “Improved Bioequivalence Assessment of Topical Dermatological Drug Products Using Dermatopharmacokinetics” (B. N’Dri–Stempfer, W. Navidi, R. Guy, and A. Bunge, Pharmaceutical Research, 2009:316–328) described a study comparing the amounts of econozole nitrate absorbed into human skin for several formulations of antifungal ointment. Both a brand name and generic drug were applied to the arms of 14 subjects, and the amounts absorbed, in μg/cm2, were measured. Following are the results. Can you conclude that the mean amount absorbed differs between the brand name and the generic drug?

The article “Differences in Susceptibilities of Different Cell Lines to Bilirubin Damage” (K. Ngai, C. Yeung, and C. Leung, Journal of Paediatric Child Health, 2000:36–45) reports an investigation into the toxicity of bilirubin on several cell lines. Ten sets of human liver cells and 10 sets of mouse fibroblast cells were placed into solutions of bilirubin in albumin with a 1.4 bilirubin/albumin molar ratio for 24 hours. In the 10 sets of human liver cells, the average percentage of cells surviving was 53.9 with a standard deviation of 10.7. In the 10 sets of mouse fibroblast cells, the average percentage of cells surviving was 73.1 with a standard deviation of 9.1. Find a 98% confidence interval for the difference in survival percentages between the two cell lines.

Heart Failure. In the paper “Cardiac-Resynchronization Therapy with or without an Implantable Defibrillator in Advanced Chronic Heart Failure” (New England Journal of Medicine, Vol. 350, pp. 2140–2150), M. Bristow et al. reported the results of a study of methods for treating patients who had advanced heart failure due to ischemic or nonischemic cardiomyopathies. A total of 1520 patientswere randomly assigned in a 1:2:2 ratio to receive optimal pharmacologic therapy alone or in combination with either a pacemaker or a pacemaker–defibrillator combination. The patients were thenobserved until they died or were hospitalized for any cause.
The article “Effects of Diets with Whole Plant-Origin Proteins Added with Different Ratiosof Taurine:Methionine on the Growth, Macrophage Activity and Antioxidant Capacity ofRainbow Trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) Fingerlings” (O. Hernandez, L. Hernandez, et al.,Veterinary and Animal Science, 2017:4-9) reports that a sample of 210 juvenile rainbowtrout fed a diet fortified with equal amounts of the amino acids taurine and methionine for aperiod of 70 days had a mean weight gain of 313 percent with a standard deviation of 25, while 210 fish fed with a control diet had a mean weight gain of 233 percent with a standard deviation of 19. Units are percent. Find a 99% confidence interval for the difference in weight gain on the two diets.

In the paper “Outcomes at School Age After Postnatal Dexamethasone Therapy for Lung Disease of Prematurity” (New England Journal of Medicine, Vol. 350, No. 13, pp. 1304–1313), T. Yeh et al. studied the outcomes at school age in children who had participated in a double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of early postnatal dexamethasone therapy for the prevention of chronic lung disease of prematurity. All of the infants in the study had had severe respiratory distress syndrome requiring mechanical ventilation shortly after birth. On the WeissStats site, we provide the school-age IQs of the 74 children in the control group, based on the study results. Use the technology of your choice to do the following. a. We want to use a 0.05 significance level to test the claim that echinacea has an effect on rhinovirus infections. a. Test the claim using a hypothesis test. b. Researchers conducted a single blind, randomized controlled trial of 25 U.S. adults. The subjects were healthy, weight-stable, male and female volunteers, aged 18 to 35 years. All subjects consumed a weight-stabilizing diet for 13 to 25 days. Afterwards, the researchers randomly assigned participants to diets containing various percentages of energy from protein: 5% (low protein), 15% (normal protein), or 25% (high protein). The subjects were not aware of the specific protein level diet to which they were assigned. On these diets the researchers overfed the participants during the last 8 weeks of their 10 to 12 week stay in the inpatient metabolic unit. The goal was to investigate the effect of overconsumption of protein on weight gain, energy expenditure, and body…arrow_forward
