Chapter 7, Problem 17aCP
Summary Introduction
To review:
Long term potentiation, its production and significance.
Introduction:
Repetitive utilization of a specific synaptic pathway can result in either increase or decrease in the strength of synaptic transmission over extended time periods. This may be mainly due to addition or removal of AMPA (α-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methyl-4-isoxazolepropionic acid) type of glutamate receptors at the postsynaptic membrane. To be more precise, insertion of AMPA receptors produces long term potentiation while removal of AMPA receptors enables long term depression of synaptic transmission.
