Concept explainers
Write the structure(s) of the major product(s) obtained when 2-chloro-2,3-dimethylbutane reacts with
(a) Sodium ethoxide (EtONa) in ethanol (EtOH) ar 80°C or (in a separate reaction) with
(b) Potassium tert-butoxide (t-BuOK) in tert-butyl alcohol (t-BuOH) at 80°C.
If more than one product is formed, indicate which one would be expected to be the major product.
(c) Provide a detailed mechanism for formation of the major product from each reaction, including a drawing of the transition stare structures.

- Three isomeric pentanols with unbranched carbon chains exist. Which of these isomers, upon dehydration at 180C, yields only 1-pentene as a product?arrow_forwardWhen 2-pentene is treated with Cl2 in methanol, three products are formed. Account for the formation of each product (you need not explain their relative percentages).arrow_forwardDraw the structure of (2Z, 6E)-3-ethyl-7-methyldeca-2, 6-dien-1-ol, the sex pheromone of the codling moth, a common agricultural pest that destroys apple crops. By spraying an apple orchard with this pheromone, the mating of male and female moths is disrupted, and moth populations can be controlled.arrow_forward
- (a) Why is the following reaction a poor method for the synthesis of t-butyl propyl ether? (b) What would be the major product from this reaction? Compound X and compound Y are produced when 2-bromo-2-methylbutane undergoes elimination reaction with alcoholic ofsodium hydroxide, NaOH. (i) Draw the structural formula of compounds W, X and Yarrow_forwardCompound A and compound B both have molecular formula C6H12. Both compounds produce epoxides when treated with a peroxy acid (RCO3H). The epoxide resulting from compound A was treated with aqueous acid (H3O+) and the resulting diol has no chiral centers. Identify the two possible structures for compound A (enter two numbers separated by commas with no spaces, e.g. "1,2") The epoxide resulting from compound B was treated with (H3O*) and the resulting diol was a meso compound. - Give the structure of the principal product(s) when each of the following alcohols reacts with (1) Na2Cr2O7/H2SO4, (2) PCC, (3) DMP, and (4) 1 equiv NaOCl-TEMPO. (a) 4-hydroxydecanal (b) 1-methylcyclohexan-1,4-diolarrow_forwardTreatment of a hydrocarbon A (molecular formula C9H18) with Br2 in the presence of light forms alkyl halides B and C, both having molecular formula C9H17Br. Reaction of either B or C with KOC(CH3)3 forms compound D (C9H16) as the major product. Ozonolysis of D forms cyclohexanone and acetone. Identify the structures of A–D.arrow_forwardWhen tert-butyl bromide is heated with an equal amount of ethanol in an inert solvent, one of the products is ethyl tert-butyl ether. (a) What happens to the reaction rate if the concentration of ethanol is doubled?arrow_forward
- Like alcohols, ethers undergo a cleavage by breaking a carbon–carbon bond between an alkyl group and the carbon bonded to the ether oxygen atom; that is, the red C–C bond in R–CH2OR' is broken. With this in mind, propose structures for the fragments formed by a cleavage of (CH3)2CHCH2OCH2CH3. Suggest a reason why an ether fragments by acleavage.arrow_forwardDraw the structure of the organic product formed when 2,3-butanedione reacts with the following reagents.
