Chapter 7, Problem 1SA

Is the following statement true or false? Unlike animals, which make many ATP by aerobic respiration, plants make all of their ATP by photosynthesis.

Expert Solution & Answer
Check Mark
Summary Introduction

To determine:

Whether the statement that “plants produce ATP by photosynthesis only” is true or not.

Introduction:

Every organism present in the environment requires energy to sustain. ATP stands for “Adenosine Triphosphate.” It provides energy to the body of an organism. Plants can prepare their food by a process known as photosynthesis. Photosynthesis also helps in the production of ATP.

Answer to Problem 1SA

Correct answer:

The given statement “plants produce ATP by photosynthesis only,” is false.

Explanation of Solution

Plants perform photosynthesis to produce food. They use water and carbon dioxide and convert them into oxygen and sugar. This type of conversion produces some molecules of ATP. Photosynthesis produces energy, and this energy is stored in the form of ATP.

However, it has been observed that the products of photosynthesis create aerobic conditions. The process that occurs in the presence of oxygen is termed as aerobic processes. Oxygen is one of the products formed by photosynthesis. As a result, plants start performing aerobic respiration to create energy. This indicates that plants produce ATP by two processes, photosynthesis, and aerobic respiration.

There is a constant flow of energy between the processes of photosynthesis and cellular respiration. Photosynthesis produces a small amount of ATP energy which is used in cellular respiration to produce more ATP molecules for use in cellular functions. Place the following statements in order (some have been done for you) to summarize how the two processes work together to produce usable energy for all living organisms. 1. Light energy is absorbed by the thylakoid membranes in chloroplasts. 2. 3. 4. PGAL is used to make glucose molecules (energy storage). 5. 6. 7. 8. 9. NADH from the Krebs cycle and O2 from the light reactions of photosynthesis are used in the electron transport chain to create a proton gradient across the inner membrane of the mitochondria. 10. 11. Energy from ATP and NADPH is used to fix CO2 and form PGAL (Calvin-Benson cycle) Pyruvate is broken down into CO2 and acetyl CoA in the matrix Krebs cycle makes NADH molecules The absorbed energy is used to make ATP and…
Which of the following statements about the challenges of C3 photosynthesis under hot conditions is TRUE? O When they close stomatal cells, they save water but lose too much O2. O Rubisco has a higher affinity for CO2, making the rate of photosynthesis too rapid. When stomatal cells close, photorespiration increases and CO2 is lost. C3 plants have to spend energy to store carbon in a separate specialized cell.
