Automotive Trades The static stability factor (SSF) is a measure of the relative rollover risk associated with an automobile.
An SSF of 1.04 or less indicates a 40% or higher rollover risk, and an SSF of 1.45 or more indicates a 10% or less rollover risk. Suppose a particular SUV has a tire-track width of 56 in. and a center of gravity 26 in. above the road.
- (a) Calculate the SSF for this SUV.
- (b) By how much would auto designers need to lower the center of gravity to improve the SSF to 1.45? Round to the nearest inch.
