Introduction:

There are twelve pairs of the ribs that are attached to the thoracic vertebrae. The first seven pairs of the ribs are known as true ribs or vertebrosternal ribs that join the sternum directly by their costal cartilages.

The remaining five pairs of the ribs are known as false ribs. Out of the five pairs, the first three are known as vertebrochondral ribs and the last two pairs of the ribs are floating ribs.
