Introduction:
Kepler described the planetary motion and laid out three laws. As per second law, a line which joins the Sun and a planet sweep out same areas during same intervals of time.
As given that the Earth moves more slowly in its orbit during summer, hence according to Kepler’s second law,the Earth must be farther from the sun so that it sweeps equal area. In order to cover an equal area, the Earth travels faster during winter when it is closer to the sun.

The Earth is closer to the sun in the winter.
