A 190-g block is launched by compressing a spring of constant k = 200 N/m by 15 cm. The spring is mounted horizontally, and the surface directly under it is frictionless. But beyond the equilibrium position of the spring end, the surface has frictional coefficient μ = 0.27. This frictional surface extends 85 cm. followed by a frictionless curved rise, as shown in Fig. 7.21. After it’s launched, where does the block finally come to rest? Measure from the left end of the frictional zone.

- A block of mass 0.250 kg is placed on top of a light, vertical spring of force constant 5 000 N/m and pushed downward so that the spring is compressed by 0.100 m. After the block is released from rest, it travels upward and then leaves the spring. To what maximum height above the point of release does it rise?arrow_forwardA 200-g steel ball is tied to a 2.00-m “massless” string and hung from the ceiling to make a pendulum, and then, the ball is brought to a position making a 30° angle with the vertical direction and released from rest. Ignoring the effects of the air resistance, find the speed of the ball when the string (a) is vertically down, (b) makes an angle of 20° with the vertical and (c) makes an angle of 10° with the vertical.arrow_forwardconsider a popgun with a spring constant 843 N/m. A projectile of mass 0.06 kg is inserted into the barrel of the gun, and the spring is compressed 0.03 m. The gun is fired directly upward. Neglect any frictional forces or air resistance. What do they find is the maximum height of the projectile? What do they find is the highest speed of the projectile?arrow_forward
- A 3.0 kg block slides with a speed of 2.3 m/s on a frictionless horizontal surface until it encounters a spring. If the block compresses the spring 5.6 cm before coming to rest, what is the force constant of the spring? What initial speed should the block have to compress the spring by 1.4 cm?arrow_forwardIf a 40 kg chest in the figure does not topple when a tensile force of 400 N is applied on a horizontal plane with a coefficient of kinetic friction = 0.2, find its speed after 5 seconds starting from the stationary state.arrow_forwardA 186-kg crate is being pushed across a horizontal floor by a force P that makes an angle of 43.6 ° below the horizontal. The coefficient of kinetic friction is 0.202. What should be the magnitude of P, so that the net work done by it and the kinetic frictional force is zero?arrow_forward
- In Fig. a 3.2 kg box of running shoes slides on a horizontal frictionless table and collides with a 2.0 kg box of ballet slippers initially at rest on the edge of the table, at height h 0.40 m. The speed of the 3.2 kg box is 3.0 m/s just before the collision. If the two boxes stick together because of packing tape on their sides, what is their kinetic energy just before they strike the floor?arrow_forwardA hockey puck of mass 0.17 kg is shot across a rough floor with the roughness different at different places, which can be described by a position-dependent coefficient of kinetic friction. For a puck moving along the x-axis, the coefficient of kinetic friction is the following function of x, where x is in m: μ(x) = 0.1 + 0.05x. Find the work done by the kinetic frictional force on the hockey puck when it has moved (a) from x = 0 to x = 2 m , and (b) from x = 2 m to x = 4 m .arrow_forwardConsider a box of mass 3.5 oh being accelerated along the floor at 2.7 m/s2. m= 3.5 kg ax = 2.7 m/s2 a. If this block is being accelerated from rest for a time period of 8 s, what is the net work, in joules, swing done on it?arrow_forward
- An Olympic swimmer stands on top of a platform at a height H above a swimming pool. At the moment of jumping into the pool, he jumps with a speed v_0 forming an angle θ with the horizontal, just as shown in the figure. The swimmer reaches a maximum height h measured from the platform to point B. (d) If we assume that when entering the water the athlete follows a straight path traveling 3.50 m before coming to a complete stop in the water and that the frictional force exerted by the water is 206 N. Determine the change in mechanical energy that the athlete experiences when stopping in the waterarrow_forwardWhat is the average power output of a 55.0 kg woman who does 50 deep knee bends in which her center of mass is lowered and raised 0.400 m in a total of 3.00 min? She does work in both directions. Group of answer choices 120 W 240 W 360 W 480 Warrow_forwardTwo forces, of magnitudes F1 = 65.0 N and F2 = 35.0 NN, act in opposite directions on a block, which sits atop a frictionless surface. Initially, the center of the block is at position xi = -6.00 cm. At some later time, the block has moved to the right, and its center is at a new position, xf = 3.00 cm. What is the net work Wnet done on the block by the two forces? Express your answer numerically, in joules. Determine the change Kf - Ki in the kinetic energy of the block as it moves from xi = -6.00 cm to xf = 3.00 cm. Express your answer numerically, in joules.arrow_forward
