Concept explainers
The difference between pyrolysis and gasification.
Explanation of Solution
Pyrolysis is the process in which combustion takes place in the absence of oxygen. It is the thermal method of decomposition at high temperature in a nonreactive environment. This method is mainly used for decomposition of organic waste. Generally, the organic substance is volatile in nature so, during pyrolysis, they leave the solid material and gets evaporated at an elevated temperature which is enriching in carbon and charcoal.
Gasification is the process in which the organic matter is decomposed in the presence of oxygen at elevated temperature. In this process, organic matter is disintegrated into hydrogen, carbon monoxide, and carbon dioxide. The product of this process is used as a renewable source of energy.

Suppose that the plant flow is 3.3ft3/s (about 2.1 million gallons per day, mgd) and a cylindrical pipe is to be used for disinfection.A. Draw a sketch of the system. Indicate the control volume by a dashed line. What kind of hydrodynamicmodel should you use for a pipe? What mixing conditions should you assume?B. Write the integrated mass balance equation for the pollutant in symbols at steady state. (“Integrated” meansthat your mass balance looks like: C = …) Define your symbols.C. For a pipe 3.5 feet in diameter and 50 feet long, what is the hydraulic residence time in minutes?D. - A thermal oxidizer incinerator operates as a plug flow reactor at a temperature of 250 deg C. The first order rate constant for vinyl chloride removal is 45/sec at 250 degrees C and the inside diameter of the incinerator (which is shaped like a cylinder) is 1 m. (a) If the pollutant (Vinyl chloride) enters the incinerator at a flow rate of 3,000 m3/min and it is desired to remove 99.99% of the pollutant, what should the length of the incinerator be? (b) What is the length of the incinerator if the desired removal is increased to 99.99995%?arrow_forwardExplain the construction of a fixed dome biogas plants.arrow_forwardExplain the construction, working, advantages and disadvantages of a floating drum biogas plants. in an integrated report.arrow_forward
