In Fig. 7-49a, a 2.0 N force is applied to a 4.0 kg block at a downward angle θ as the block moves rightward through 1.0 m across a frictionless floor. Find an expression for the speed vƒ of the block at the end of that distance if the block’s initial velocity is(a) 0 and (b) 1.0 m/s to the right. (c) The situation in Fig. 7-49b is similar in that the block is initially moving at 1.0 m/s to the right, but now the 2.0 N force is directed downward to the left. Find an expression for the speed vƒ of the block at the end of the 1.0 m distance. (d) Graph all three expressions for vf versus downward angle θ for θ = 0° to θ = 90°. Interpret the graphs.

An Introduction to Thermal Physics
- A block of mass m is initially at rest at the top of an inclined plane, which has a height of 4.8 m and makes an angle of θ = 27° with respect to the horizontal. After being released, it is observed to be traveling at v = 0.65 m/s a distance d after the end of the inclined plane as shown. The coefficient of kinetic friction between the block and the plane is μp = 0.1, and the coefficient of friction on the horizontal surface is μr = 0.2. a)What is the speed of the block, in meters per second, just after it leaves the inclined plane? b)Find the distance, d, in meters.arrow_forwardAt what initial speed should a box of mass m be thrown parallel to the surface of the inclined plane from the lower end of an inclined plane with friction making a 30 degree angle with the horizontal direction so that it can travel 3m on the inclined plane? (The kinetic coefficient of friction between the box and the surface of the inclined plane is mk = 0.02.)arrow_forwardDuring the pitching motion, a baseball pitcher exerted an average horizontal force of 60 N against the 0.15 kg baseball while moving it through a horizontal displacement of 2.0 m before he released it. If the baseball’s velocity at the start of the pitching motion was zero, how fast was the ball moving at the instant of release?arrow_forward
- a mother and her child are skiing together, and the mother is holding the end of a rope tied to the child's waist. They are moving at a speed of 7.2 kph on a gently sloping portion of the ski slope when the morher observes that they are approaching a steep descrnt. She pulls on the rope with an average force of 15 N. Knowing the coefficient of frivtion between the mother and the ground is 0.2, the mass of the mother is 62 kg and the angle of the rope does not change, determine the acceleration of the mother, the time reuired dor the mother's speed to be cut in half, and the distance traveled.arrow_forwardIn a circus performance, a monkey is strapped to a sled and both are given an initial speed of 4.0 m/s up a 20° inclined track. The combined mass of monkey and sled is 20 kg, and the coefficient of kinetic friction between sled and incline is 0.20. How far up the incline do the monkey and sled move?arrow_forwardStarting from rest, a 92-kg firefighter slides down a fire pole. The average frictional force exerted on him by the pole has a magnitude of 710 N, and his speed at the bottom of the pole is 3.5 m/s. How far did he slide down the pole?arrow_forward
- A 60.0 kg skier with an initial speed of 12.0 m/s coasts up a 2.50 m high rise as shown above. Find her final speed at the top, given that the coefficient of friction between her skis and the snow is 0.0800. Group of answer choices 10.7 m/s 9.54 m/s 8.36 m/s 7.41 m/sarrow_forwardA baseball has a mass of 0.140 kg, and it is pitched towards home plate at a speed of 48.0 m/s. Assume that the ball is pitched horizontally and that the ball is hit horizontally back in the opposite direction. If the bat exerts an average force of 9100 N for 2.80 ms, what is the final speed of the ball in m/s?arrow_forwardAn object with mass m1 = 1kg moving to the right at a speed of 4m / s collides with a spring attached to a second block of mass m2 = 2kg moving left at 2m / s on a horizontal plane without friction as shown in the figure. The force constant of the spring is 105N / m and find the compression amount of the spring when the mass m1 moves at a speed of 3m / s to the right.arrow_forward
- A ball having mass 3.2kg and velocity 9.4m/s travels due east. An impulsive force at point O, makes it change direction to due north with velocity 9.9 m/s. What is the angle counterclockwise from the +x (east) axis of the impulsive force in degrees?arrow_forwardThe coef of friction between the block of mass m1 = 3.0 kg and the surface is 0.400. The system starts from rest. What is the speed of the ball of mass m2 = 5.0 kg when it has fallen a distance of h = 1.50 m.arrow_forwardA golf club strikes a 0.062-kg golf ball in order to launch it from the tee. For simplicity, assume that the average net force applied to the ball acts parallel to the ball’s motion, has a magnitude of 6120 N, and is in contact with the ball for a distance of 0.0080 m. With what speed does the ball leave the club?arrow_forward
