Which of the following best describes an accelerated depreciation method?
A. A method by which an equal amount of expense is assigned for every full year of use.
B. A method by which depreciation is based on the level of actual usage rather than the passage of time.
C. A method of determining depreciation which assigns larger expenses to the initial years of an asset’s service and smaller expenses to the later years.
D. A method of allocating the cost of a wasting asset to expense over the periods during which the value is removed from the property.
A financial analyst is studying the income statement eff ect of two alternative depreciationmethods for a recently acquired piece of equipment. She gathers the following information about the equipment’s expected production life and use:Year 1 Year 2 Year 3 Year 4 Year 5 TotalUnits of production 2,000 2,000 2,000 2,000 2,500 10,500Compared with the units-of-production method of depreciation, if the company uses thestraight-line method to depreciate the equipment, its net income in Year 1 will most likely be:A. lower.B. higher.C. the same

- Which of the following is not true about the MACRS depreciation system: A salvage value must be determined before depreciation percentages are applied to depreciable real estate. Residential rental buildings are depreciated over 27.5 years straight-line. Commercial real estate buildings are depreciated over 39 years straight-line. No matter when during the month depreciable real estate is purchased, it is considered to have been placed in service at mid-month for MACRS depreciation purposes.arrow_forwardTo test your formulas, assume the machine purchased had an estimated useful life of three years (20,000, 30,000, and 50,000 hours, respectively). Enter the new information in the Data Section of the worksheet. Does your depreciation total 320,000 under all three methods? There are three common errors made by students completing this worksheet. Lets clear up two of them. One, an asset that has a three-year life should have no depreciation claimed in Year 4. This can be corrected using an =IF statement in Year 4. For example, the correct formula in cell C32 is =IF(B32D9,0,(D7D8)/D9) or =IF(B32D9, 0, SLN(D7, D8, D9)). You may wish to edit what you have already entered rather than retype it. Two, as mentioned in requirement 2, the double-declining-balance calculation needs to be modified in the last year of the assets life. Assuming you have already modified the formula for Year 4 (per instructions in step 2), alter the formula for Year 3 also. If you corrected any formulas, test their correctness by trying different estimated useful lives (between 3 and 8) in cell E9. Then reset the Data Section to the original values, save the revised file as DEPREC2, and reprint the worksheet to show the correct formulas. The third common error doesnt need to be corrected in this problem. The general form of the double-declining-balance formula needs to be modified to check the net book value of the asset each year to make sure it does not go below salvage value. =DDB does this automatically, but if you are writing your own formulas, this gets very complicated and is beyond the scope of the problem.arrow_forwardAn accelerated depreciation method that takes more expense in the first few years of the assets life is ________. - On December 31, Strike Company has decided to discard one of its batting cages. The equipment had an initial cost of $238,400 and has accumulated depreciation of $214,560. Depreciation has been recorded up to the end of the year. Which of the following will be included in the journal entry for the disposal? a. Loss on Disposal of Asset, debit, $214,560 b. Accumulated Depreciation, debit, $238,400 c. Gain on Disposal of Asset, credit, $23,840 d. Equipment, credit, $238,400arrow_forwardWith direct write off, one writes off amounts from sales in the past are determined to be uncollectible. An estimate writes off estimated amounts of current sales that are expected to be uncollectible. Does that help you determine the accounting principle used for estimates? And a fixed asset question: when an asset is fully depreciated (think Kate's Cards after four years when the equipment with cost of $4,800 has accumulated depreciation of $4,800), should a company keep it on the books? Why or why not?arrow_forwardLisa Miller of Basket Wonders (BW) is calculating the depreciation on a machine with a depreciable basis of $50,000, an 8-year useful life, and Scrap Value is $2,000.
