Section 7.3

7.3 What are the major types of marine aquatic systems and how are human activities affecting them?

What is the key concept for this section? What percentage of the earth’s surface is covered with ocean water? What is an aquatic life zone? Distinguish between a saltwater (marine) life zone and a freshwater life zone, and give two examples of each. List four factors that determine the types and numbers of organisms found in the layers of aquatic life zones.

To determine

The key concept of the given section which includes aquatic biomes and the percentage of Earth’s surface that is covered with ocean water. The meaning of the term aquatic life zone and the difference between marine (saltwater) life zone and freshwater life zone with examples. The four factors which determine the type and organisms found in particular aquatic life zone.

Explanation of Solution

The given section is mainly composed of aquatic life systems. The life forms of water have a rich habitat of animals and plants which influence the ecology and environment of the Earth in a major way. Coral reefs are the biggest example of it.

About 71% of the Earth is covered with ocean water which can be divided into four oceans: Arctic, Atlantic, Pacific, and the Indian Ocean.

Aquatic life zones are the zones of water ecosystems which support life. They are divided into marine or saltwater life zones and freshwater life zones.

Following are the differences between saltwater and freshwater life zones:

No.CharacteristicsSaltwater life zonesFreshwater life zones
1.Type of waterSalty waterFresh water
2.Ecological importanceServe as a major site of global photosynthesis.Helps in restoring groundwater resources.
3.Economical importanceSource of food and mineralsSource of hydroelectricity...
