Dimensional thinking. The text defines the dimension of an object as follows. Suppose you have an object for which N copies can be assembled to construct a larger version of the object that has been scaled by a factor of S. The dimension of the object, called d, is the power we have to raise S to in order to obtain N. Thus, S, d, and N satisfy the equation
