Concept explainers
To explain: The three different processes that occur during a sexual life cycle that increase the genetic diversity of offspring.
Concept introduction: Sexual reproduction increases the genetic diversity thatenables organisms to survive better in the unfavorable environment. Genetic diversity mainly arises due to the shuffling of chromosomes during the meiosis process. Different combinations of chromosomes at metaphase 1 of meiosis occurring in the gametes are one process leading to the genetic diversity. Crossing over during prophase Iincreases the chance of producing a new combination of genes by exchanging chromosomes.

- Briefly describe TWO events during meiosis that contribute to genetic variation in the gametes.arrow_forwardDescribe what sexual dimorphism is and why its existence is puzzling.arrow_forwardWhich factors are responsible for successful reproduction in male? Do you think the reproductive efficiency of male is declining with the passage of time? Support your point of view with examples.arrow_forward
- Explain whether or not genetic variation exists from the parent to offspring organisms during asexual reproduction, AND why? Asexual reproduction produces offspring that are genetically identical to the parent because the offspring are all clones of the original parent.arrow_forwardSexual reproduction results in offspring that are genetically different from one another and from their parents. Describe four mechanisms that produce this genetic variation. Do any of these mechanisms occur in asexualreproduction?arrow_forwardA paradox of sexual reproduction is that despite its being widespread in nature, the question of why it exists at all is still unresolved. What are some disadvantages of sex? What are some consequences of sex that make it so important?arrow_forward
- Define the two alternatives of bisexual reproduction-parthenogenesis and hermaphroditism, and give a specific example from the animal kingdom for each. Also differentiate meiotic and ameiotic parthenogenesis.arrow_forwardexplain how sexual reproduction increases genetic diversity from one generation to the next. Specifically, describe how crossing over and random alignment in meiosis create genetic diversity. Then describe how fertilization increases genetic diversity.arrow_forwardDefine two alternatives to bisexual reproduction-hermaphroditism and parthenogenesis and offer a specific example of each from the animal kingdom.arrow_forward
