Haliade-X 12 MW is one of the most powerful offshore wind turbines in the world and it will be installed in the New Jersey offshore area (Figure 1). Energy storage is a long-time problem for wind energy, because the period of wind power is not necessary at the peak of electricity demand. To match the power supply and demand, the generated energy has to be stored either in battery or other forms.
There is an idea to use the tower of the wind turbine as energy storage – sea water is pumped to the top of the tower when power generation is more than demand; and water is released to drive a generator at the base of the tower to supply energy when it is needed. Assume the turbine tower is 20 m below the sea bottom and the water depth is 30 m, and the tower is filled by sea water (density = 1030 kg/m3). Answer the questions below (make sure your answer is in both gauge pressure and absolute pressure form).
At the mean sea level, how much is the pressure between inside and outside the…
A) Explain the Law of Conservation of Energy in the context of this
problem.
In a hydroelectric dam, water falls 30.0 mm and then spins a turbine to generate electricity.
You may want to review (Pages 234 - 238) .
What is ΔUΔUDeltaU of 1.0 kg of water?
Express your answer with the appropriate units.
Suppose the dam is 80% efficient at converting the water's potential energy to electrical energy. How many kilograms of water must pass through the turbines each second to generate 51.0 MWMW of electricity? This is a typical value for a small hydroelectric dam.
Express your answer using three decimal places.
