Most of the cell surface receptors are G-protein coupled receptors, whose second messenger is cAMP. The first messengers are the one which bind to the cell-surface receptors, then the receptor signals stimulation of the second messenger. The second messengers are small molecules, so they can move the signals at a fast pace.
