Answer to Problem 29E

The given table is completed as shown below.

Gas Molecules Mass STP Volume
nitrogen, N2 6.022×1023 28.02g 22.4L
oxygen, O2 6.022×1023 32.0g 22.4L
nitrogen dioxide, 6.022×1023 46.01g 22.4L
NO2

Explanation of Solution

It is given that the number of moles of each gas N2, O2 and NO2 is equal to 1mol. The number of molecules present in 1mol of a gas is equal to 6.022×1023. Therefore, the number of molecules of gases N2, O2 and NO2 is equal to 6.022×1023. At STP, one mole of every gas occupies a volume equal to 22.4L which is known as the molar volume of the gas. Therefore, the volume of the gases N2, O2 and NO2 is equal to 22.4L.

The mass of N2 molecule is calculated as shown below.

MassofN2=NumberofatomsofN×Massof1Natom

Substitute the values of number of atoms of N and mass of 1N atom in the above expression.

MassofN2=NumberofatomsofN×Massof1Natom=2×14.01g/mol=28.02g/mol

Therefore, the mass of N2 gas is 28.02g/mol.

The mass of O2 molecule is calculated as shown below.

MassofO2=NumberofatomsofO×Massof1Oatom

Substitute the values of number of atoms of O and mass of 1O atom in the above expression.

MassofO2=NumberofatomsofO×Massof1Oatom=2×16.0g/mol=32.0g/mol

Therefore, the mass of O2 gas is 32.0g/mol.

The mass of NO2 molecule is calculated as shown below.

MassofNO2=((NumberofatomsofN×Massof1Natom)+(NumberofatomsofO×Massof1Oatom))

Substitute the values of number of atoms and mass of 1 atom of nitrogen and oxygen in the above expression.

MassofNO2=((NumberofatomsofN×Massof1Natom)+(NumberofatomsofO×Massof1Oatom))=(1×14.01g/mol)+(2×16.0g/mol)=14.01g/mol+32.0g/mol=46.01g/mol

Therefore, the mass of NO2 gas is 46.01g/mol.

Therefore, the given table is completed as shown below.

Gas Molecules Mass STP Volume
nitrogen, N2 6.022×1023 28.02g 22.4L
oxygen, O2 6.022×1023 32.0g 22.4L
nitrogen dioxide, 6.022×1023 46.01g 22.4L
NO2
Conclusion

The given table is completed as shown below.

Gas Molecules Mass STP Volume
nitrogen, N2 6.022×1023 28.02g 22.4L
oxygen, O2 6.022×1023 32.0g 22.4L
nitrogen dioxide, 6.022×1023 46.01g 22.4L
NO2
