Relevant costs, opportunity costs. Gavin Martin, the general manager of Oregano Software, must decide when to release the new version of Oregano’s spreadsheet package, Easyspread 2.0. Development of Easyspread 2.0 is complete; however, the diskettes, compact discs, and user manuals have not yet been produced. The product can be shipped starting July 1, 2017.
The major problem is that Oregano has overstocked the previous version of its spreadsheet package, Easyspread 1.0. Martin knows that once Easyspread 2.0 is introduced, Oregano will not be able to sell any more units of Easyspread 1.0. Rather than just throwing away the inventory of Easyspread 1.0, Martin is wondering if it might be better to continue to sell Easyspread 1.0 for the next three months and introduce Easyspread 2.0 on October 1, 2017, when the inventory of Easyspread 1.0 will be sold out.

To expand sales, Omni is considering paying a commission to its sales force. The controller, Matthew Barnhill, asks you to compute: (1) the new breakeven sales figure, and (2) the operating profit if sales increase 15% under the new sales commission plan. He thinks you can handle this task because you learned CVP analysis in your accounting class. You spend the next day collecting information from the accounting records, performing the analysis, and writing a memo to explain the results. The company president is pleased with your memo. You report that the new sales commission plan will lead to a significant increase in operating income and only a small increase in breakeven sales. The following week, you realize that you made an error in the CVP analysis. You overlooked the sales personnel’s $2,800 monthly salaries, and you did not include this fixed…arrow_forwardValencia Manufacturing Company manufactures and sells musical gadgets. - A manager in your organization just received a special order at a price that is “below cost.” The manager points to the document and says, “These are the kinds of orders that will get you in trouble. The profit per night for each type of room and rental class is as follows: Type I rooms do not have high-speed wireless Internet access and are not available for the Business rental class. Round Trees management makes a forecast of the demand by rental class for each night in the future. A linear programming model developed to maximize profit is used to determine how many reservations to accept for each rental class. The demand forecast for a particular night is 130 rentals in the Super Saver class, 60 in the Deluxe class, and 50 in the Business class. Round Tree has 100 Type I rooms and 120 Type II rooms. a. Formulate and solve a linear program to determine how many reservations to accept in each rental class and how the reservations should be allocated to room types. b. For the solution in part (a), how many reservations can be accommodated in each rental class? Is the demand for any rental class not satisfied? c. With a little work, an unused office area could be converted to a rental room. If the conversion cost is the same for both types of rooms, would you recommend converting the office to a Type I or a Type II room? Why? d. Could the linear programming model be modified to plan for the allocation of rental demand for the next night? What information would be needed and how would the model change?arrow_forward
