Concept explainers
Interpretation:
The structure of sabinene and the other compound, which is formed in the ozonolysis of sabinene followed by hydrolysis in the presence of zinc, is to be given. Also, the structure of
Concept introduction:
>Ozonolysis of
On ozonolysis, cyclic alkenes produce a single compound containing two carbonyl groups.
>If formaldehyde is produced after ozonolysis, the alkene has a terminal double bond.
>If an aldehyde is produced after ozonolysis, at least one of the double bonded carbon atoms in the alkene has a hydrogen attached to it.
>If a ketone is produced after ozonolysis, at least one of the double bonded carbon atoms in the alkene must be disubstituted.
>The total number of hydrogen and carbon atoms in the original alkene is equal to the total number of carbon and hydrogen atoms in two products formed in the ozonolysis reaction.

- Claisen condensation between diethyl phthalate and ethyl acetate followed by saponification, acidification, and decarboxylation forms a diketone, C9H6O2. Propose structural formulas for compounds A and B and the diketone.arrow_forwardWhen cis-4-chlorocyclohexanol is treated with sodium hydroxide in ethanol, it gives mainly the substitution product trans-1,4-cyclohexanediol (1). Under the same reaction conditions, trans-4-chlorocyclohexanol gives 3-cyclohexenol (2) and the bicyclic ether (3). (a) Propose a mechanism for formation of product (1), and account for its configuration. (b) Propose a mechanism for formation of product (2). (c) Account for the fact that the bicyclic ether (3) is formed from the trans isomer but not from the cis isomer.arrow_forwardDihydropyran is synthesized by treating tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol with an arenesulfonic acid, ArSO3H. Propose a mechanism for this conversion.arrow_forward
- Amines are converted into alkenes by a two-step process called Hofmann elimination. SN2 reaction of the amine with an excess of CH3I in the first step yields an intermediate that undergoes E2 reaction when treated with silver oxide as base. Pentylamine, for example, yields 1-pentene. Propose a structure for the intermediate, and explain why it readily undergoes elimination.arrow_forwardTreatment of 1-aminoadamantane, C10H17N, with methyl 2,4-dibromobutanoate in the presence of a nonnucleophilic base, R3N, involves two successive SN2 reactions and gives compound A. Propose a structural formula for compound A.arrow_forwardA step in a synthesis of PGE1 (prostaglandin E1, alprostadil) is the reaction of a trisubstituted cyclohexene with bromine to form a bromolactone. Propose a mechanism for formation of this bromolactone and account for the observed stereochemistry of each substituent on the cyclohexane ring. Alprostadil is used as a temporary therapy for infants born with congenital heart defects that restrict pulmonary blood flow. It brings about dilation of the ductus arteriosus, which in turn increases blood flow in the lungs and blood oxygenation.arrow_forward
- When 1-butanol is treated with conc. H2SO4 and heat .A product 'A' is formed from the reaction. Treatment of 'A' with HCl/H2O gives 'B'. Treatment of 'A' with cold KMnO4/OH- gives 'C' Treatment of 'A' with hot KMnO4 /OH- gives 'D' followed by acidification of the mixture to give 'E' 1. identify the compounds represented by A,B,C,D and E.arrow_forwardTreatment of trans-2-chlorocyclohexanol with NaOH yields 1, 2-epoxy-cyclohexane, but reaction of the cis isomer under the same conditions yields cyclohexanone. Propose mechanisms for both reactions, and explain why the different results are obtained.arrow_forwardPropose a mechanism for the acid-catalyzed hydration of 1-methylcyclohexene to give 1-methylcyclohexanol. Which step in your mechanism is rate-determining?arrow_forward
