The manufacturer of Boston and Vermont asphalt shingles provides its customers with a 20-year warranty on most of its products. To determine whether a shingle will last the entire Warranty period, accelerated-life testing is conducted at the manufacturing plant. Accelerated-life testing exposes the shingle to the stresses it would be subject to in a lifetime of normal use via a laboratory experiment that takes only a few minutes to conduct. In this test, a shingle is repeatedly scraped with a brush for a short period of time, and the shingle granules removed by the brushing are weighed (in grams). Shingles that experience low amount of granule loss are expected to last longer in normal use than shingles that experience high amount of granule loss. In this situation, a shingle should experience no more than 0.8 grams of granule loss if it is expected to last the length of the warranty period. The file Granule contains a sample of 170 measurements made on the company’s Boston shingles and 140 measurements made on Vermont shingles.
a. For the Boston shingles, construct a
b. For the Vermont shingles, construct a
c. Do you think the assumption needed to construct the confidence interval estimates in (a) and (b) is valid?
d. Based on the results of (a) and (b), what conclusions can you reach concerning the mean granule loss of the Boston and Vermont shingles?

- Suppose that a healthy population of some species is growing in a limited environment and that the current population P0 is fairly close to the carrying capacity M0. You might imagine a population of fish living in a freshwater lake in a wilderness area. Suddenly a catastrophe such as the Mount St. Helens volcanic eruption contaminates the lake and destroys a significant part of the food and oxygen on which the fish depend. The result is a new environment with a carrying capacity M1 considerably less than M0 and, in fact, less than the current population P0. Starting at some time before the catastrophe, sketch a “before-and-after” curve that shows how the fish population responds to the change in environment.arrow_forwardWhat does February 2020’s actual grocery store sales value tell us about the strength of this model to extend past the ten years covered in the scatterplot? arrow_forwardUse the basic equation for the capital asset pricing model (CAPM) to Find the risk-free rate for a firm with a required return of 15% and a beta of 1.25 when the market return is 14%arrow_forward

According to a recent study by the National Soft Drink Association, 62% of schools nationally already have such contracts. This comes at a time when dentists are seeing an alarming increase in horribly decayed teeth and eroded enamel in the mouths of teenagers and young adults. With ready access to soft drinks, children tend to drink them all day. That, combined with no opportunity to brush, leads to disaster, dentists say. Suppose that 20 schools around the country are randomly selected and asked if they have a soft drink contract. - A municipal solid-waste site for a city must be located at Site A or Site B. After sorting, some of the solid refuse will be transported to an electric powerplant where it will be used as fuel. Data for the hauling of refuse from each site to the power plant are shown in Table P2-4. If the power plant will pay $8.00 per cubic yard of sorted solid waste delivered to the plant, where should the solid-waste site be located? Use the city’s viewpoint and assume that 200,000 cubic yards of refuse will be hauled to the plant for one year only. One site must be selected.arrow_forwardThe analysis of tooth shrinkage byC.
