Smartphone usage differs by gender. The role of the smartphone in modern life was investigated by a Compete Pulse (November 2011) survey. A total of 251 male and 284 female smartphone users were interviewed in the sample. One of the objectives was to compare male and female smartphone users. For example, 48% of men conduct financial transactions on their phone, as compared to 60% of women. Also, 42% of men watch streaming content (movies/TV) on their phone, as compared to 35% of women.
- a. Describe the two populations of interest in the survey.
- b. Give an estimate of the proportion of men and the proportion of women who conduct financial transactions on a smartphone.
- c. Find a 90% confidence interval for the difference between the proportions of men and women who conduct financial transactions on a smartphone.
- d. From your answer to part c, can you conclude that men are less likely than women to conduct financial transactions on a smartphone? Explain.
- e. Give an estimate of the proportion of men and the proportion of women who watch streaming content on their smartphone.
- f. Conduct a test to determine whether the proportions of men and women who watch streaming content on their phone differ. Use α = .10.
