Answer to Problem 8.11P

The strain hardening coefficient 'n' for the metal is 0.51. It is in the range of FCC.

Explanation of Solution

Given Information:

The measurements in the plastic region are as follows:

Force (N)Change in gage length (cm) Diameter(cm)
16,2400.66421.2028
19,0661.47541.0884
19,2732.46630.9848

Calculation:

The diameter of the metal bar =1.33 cm

Gage length of bar = 3 cm

When force = 16240 N, true stress-strain of the bar is given by

The stress is given by a general case:

  σT=FA ------------- (1)

Where,

  F1=Force applied on bar=16240 NA1=π4d12d1=1.2028 cm

Equation (1) becomes,

  σT=16240π4 (1.2028×10)2σT=143MPa

Engineering strain is given by when change length (ΔL) is 0.6642 to original length is 3 cm.

  ξ=(ΔL)l ---------------- (2)

  ξ=0.66423ξ=0.2214

Strain hardening is given by,

  ξT=ln(1+ξ) ------------------ (3)

Where,

  ξ=Engineering strainξT=ln(1+0.2214)ξT=0.200

Similarly, at f = 19066 N and d =1.0884 cm.

Equation (1) becomes,

  σT=19066π4 (1.0884×10)2σT=205MPa

Now at,

  ΔL=1.4754cml=3cm

Equation (2) becomes,

  ξ=ΔLLξ=1.47543ξ=0.4918

Also, true strain is given by at ξ=0.4918

  ln=ln(1+ξ)ξT=ln(1+0.4918)ξT=0.400

Similarly, at F=19273, d=0.9848.

From equation (1),

  σT=253MPa

Also, at

  ΔL=2.4663cmL=3

Equation (2) become,

  ξ=2.46633ξ=0.8221

The true strain is given by,

  ln=ln(1+ξ)ξT=ln(1+0.8221)ξT=0.6

Putting all value in the table,

Sr.no.Force   (Ft)(N)Engineering strain   (ξ)(cm/cm)Diameter D (mm)True stress   (σT)MPaTrue strain   (ξT)(cm/cm)
1162400.221412.0281430.200
2190660.491810.8842050.400
3192730.82219.8482130.600

Strength coefficient formula is given by

  σT=k(ξT)n -------------------- (4)

Here,

  σT=True stressξT=True strainn=Strain hardening componentk=Strength coefficient

Substitute,

  ξT=0.2σT=143

Equation (2) becomes,

  143=k+0.2n

Applying natural logarithm on both sides,

  ln(143)=ln(k×0.2n)ln(143)=ln(k)+ln(0.20)ln(143)=ln(k)+n×ln(0.2)4.9628=ln(k)1.609n ---------------- (a)

Similarly substituting,

  (σT=k(ξT)nMPa

  σT=253MPaandξT=0.6

Equation (4) becomes,

  253=k×0.6n

Applying logarithm on both sides,

  ln(253)=ln[(k)×0.6n)ln(253)=ln(k)+ln(0.6)5.5334=lnk0.5108n ------------------------ (b)

Equating equation (a) and (b),

  n=0.51

Conclusion

Thus, strain hardening coefficient for the metal in FCC is 0.51.
